Our Founders

“Our mission – to provide a safety net for women facing a diagnosis of breast cancer without the means to access professional treatment – is succeeding.  I personally cannot find words to adequately describe how much the generosity of our donors has meant to our patients, our staff and to me.  So I will borrow some beautiful words from Ralph Waldo Emerson: ‘To find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, THIS is to have succeeded.’”  – David Caplin, M.D.

Dr. David Caplin is a Board-certified plastic surgeon and one of the founders of Gateway to Hope. He received his undergraduate degree with honors from Kenyon College and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society. He completed his training in general surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and his residency in plastic surgery at Barnes Hospital.  Dr. Caplin has consistently been chosen as one of “America’s Top Surgeons” and “Top Doctors” for many years.

After witnessing the difficulties that many people face after their diagnosis of breast cancer, Dr. Caplin was inspired to start the Gateway to Hope program.  He wanted to make sure that no individual would go through a diagnosis of breast cancer without the treatment that they need.  He sought to create a program which would help to ensure the treatment of those individuals whose incomes were too high to qualify for the state or federal health care programs, but who would have great difficulty affording treatment.
Dr. Caplin’s continuous support of Gateway to Hope has helped the program succeed.  He constantly works to spread the message of the program and to seek the assistance of additional partners and providers.  Dr. Caplin’s constant willingness to help our patients and assist with the program’s needs has been pertinent to the success of Gateway to Hope.

“Gateway to Hope’s success is measured not only by the number of lives we have saved but also by the number of people who have rallied to the cause.  Our supporters are the true unheralded heroes.  Out patient’ stories are heartbreaking and inspiring and their gratitude for the care our organization provides is humbling.” – Dr. David Caplin

Our Founders

“I am very pleased that Gateway to Hope has functioned so well and continues to grow at a rapid pace.  I feel privileged that we are able to provide professional care to women diagnosed with breast cancer who do not have the means to access the necessary treatment required to survive.” – Marlys Schuh, M.D.

Dr. Marlys Schuh is a Board-certified surgeon and is one of the founders of Gateway to Hope.  She received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Dakota and her medical degree from Washington University.  She completed her training in general surgery at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, and she trained in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in New York.

Along with Dr. Caplin, Dr. Schuh was also searching for a way to help those individuals who were having difficulties affording the treatment that they needed.  Dr. Schuh works in the breast cancer field to provide care for those afflicted by the disease; Gateway to Hope was the perfect way to extend that care to those who had no other way to obtain assistance with their breast cancer.

Dr. Schuh’s support of Gateway to Hope over the past 6 years has helped the program to succeed greatly.  Without her dedication to helping those with breast cancer, especially those individuals who are uninsured and underinsured, Gateway to Hope’s success would not have been possible.

“I am continually grateful for the generosity shown by our donors.  Their many kindnesses are truly amazing and will never be forgotten by either Gateway to Hope or our patients.” – Marlys Schuh, M.D.
